Many SEO experts will argue on this one but I would recommend limiting your h1 tags to only 1 per page. If you have multiple tags of the same kind this will confuse search engines as they will not know what is the most important thing for you in this particular page that has more than 1 tag of the same kind.

Good question! Many people asks the same question. Let me clear, H1 tag helps the website visitors and search engines to understand what the page is about. So, if you will add more than One h1 tag on the single page then, search engine and visitors will get confuse to understand that, what the page is about. So, we should always use only one H1 tag in the website.

It is well and good to have only one H1 tag in the website as it gives clear presentation for visitors and search engines to understand what the page is about.

It is most important to KEEP IMPLEMENTATION CONSISTENT across your entire site content to maximize usability. If using multiple H2 for stuffing them with keywords, that would be bad and yes it can hurt, but if you are using it semantically, and As long as those headings make sense in terms of the structure of your content, it's perfectly ok and You can use any number of H2, H3, H4, H5, H6 Elements on any page.
